Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Welcome to our 24th issue - From next month to celebrate our 2nd anniversary we shall be changing the name of the newsletter, so we do invite you all to write in with suggestions for a new name for the magazine of the Central Gurdwara Resource Centre.

Recently I saw a small poster like the one on the left:

This was simply put and to the point. To be a GurSikh does involve following the teachings of the Guru Granth Sahib, but today it seems that the above problems are affecting the Sikh community the most. There are no excuses for following the caste system, drinking and smoking. The Guru's forbade these things most strongly. Yet many Sikhs carry on regardless.

The third point - Getting rid of Ego is probably the topic that Guru Sahib has dwelled upon the most in Guru Granth Sahib. The person who has eliminated Ego is a Brahm- Giani, someone who has reached the highest level of spirituality. This must be our goal of achieving Oneness with Waheguru. However in the simple terms of the poster we should make a start

today by being humble in our actions and our thoughts, and by treating everyone as our brothers and sisters.

Becoming a GurSikh naturally means a lot more than these three points. But if we all can take on these teachings and encourage others around us to adopt the same principles in their lives, we will be on our way to a better society.

This month we start our serialised translation with explanation of Chaupa-ee Sahib, we hope this will shed some light on the meaning of this Bayntee written by our tenth master Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

We also have an article about Bhagat Kabir Ji, who is one of the saints from other faiths, whose writings are included in Guru Granth Sahib.

Finally this month we feature an important project which was initiated by the British Punjabi Professional Service. A campaign to encourage the media (TV and Radio) to feature more Punjabi language content. Do contact them to participate in this important campaign. Address in on the back page.
