Welcome
to our 25th issue - we do hope you like
the new look and name. Naturally all your
comments and letters will be gladly
received.
So the Summer is over, I hope many of you
attended or were involved with the
various Gurmat camps that were held
throughout the country. I am pleased to
report that the Akaal Purakh Ki Fauj
series of 5 camps was very successful
with all concerned giving good reports.
The Pathfinder camp was also mentioned in
The Times newspaper. Do look out for many
more events and camps that will be held
in the coming months by the Fauj. The
first of these is later this month at the
Central Gurdwara London - see the list of
events on the back page.
This month we feature again the writing
of Professor Puran Singh the renowned
Sikh writer and poet. The piece here was
written about 3 years before his death in
1931. It is wonderful that we have had
such talented poets and writers, yet
today in our community young people are
not encouraged to enter into the Arts. We
have so few young artists, poets or
writers, so it is up to all of us to look
to these fields and encourage others to
follow these worthwhile pursuits. The
Guru's themselves wrote Gurbani in
poetry, and were accomplished musicians.
They also encouraged their followers to
write. There is a story about Bhai Nand
Lal, a poet during Guru Gobind Singh Ji's
time. He approached the Guru with weapons
and a kirpan and asked the Guru to bless
him before joining the battle field. Guru
Gobind Singh took the kirpan and gave
Bhai Nand Lal a pen.
We present, this month, a short
life history of another Great Sikh
Theologian of the Guru's times, Bhai
Gurdas Ji.
This month also sees the festival of
Diwali, on this day Guru Hargobind Ji was
released from prison. But he was not
content with just his freedom, but
ensured the freedom of 52 other princes,
that were jailed with him as prisoners of
conscience (because of their
religion). So let us commemorate this
event by thinking of the thousands of
people who are incarcerated unjustly
throughout the world, and maybe we can
make a difference to the lives of others,
if we sincerely put our minds to it.
Finally I end with an appeal. We are
looking for volunteers to help with all
kinds of Sikh activities. If you or your
friends are interested, do get in touch.
We should all work together to make a
co-ordinated effort to promote Sikhism.
Bhupinder Singh
